Restaurant Review – Epicurus Place

Well, before I get into this review, I want to explain the review style I will be using. I decided that to use stars to give an overall ranking would be passe – so I’ll be using construction cones instead. These cones are a ubiquitous reminder of the horrors of Michigan winters and the resulting stretch-marks and C-sections that they create in the land of the first paved road (Woodward, 1908) in the country. Traffic cones mean slow down. The more cones I give (up to 5) in a review of a restaurant: the more you should consider slowing down when you drive by and going in. Get it? Clever huh? Maybe some nerd could whip up some graphics I could store on my machine and drop in for each review. [wink wink] ;)

Epicurus is located at Cass and Warren across from WSU campus. It is exactly what it trys to be – a well run Greek diner. It is the kind of place that you would take a date that you wanted to convince that you were uber-cool and knew all of the spots that the “locals” know about and love. I don’t care what time of the day you go in there you will find Joe, the owner, with a smile and a towel over his shoulder. He’s about my age – in his mid twenties, and runs a tight ship. The inside has a generous smoking section, a simple set-up, and quick (I mean quick) food delivery time. You can choose to dine in or carry out.

Here’s what I order most, (everything listed is about 5 or 6 bucks):
1. The Gyro platter – meat, rice and a pita – simple but awesome
2. The tomato and feta pizza – I am not a vegetarian, but I would break federal laws some days if I had to, to eat this
3. A knock-off “Hani” – I think he calls it “chicken pita” – basically breaded chiken in a pita with cheese and lettuce, et al.

I am in there about 3 times a week for lunch, and I recently started having my staff meetings there because I like the atmosphere so much – he knows my voice over the phone when I pre-order now :)

The ONLY downside is no Wi-Fi.

If you go by, tell him Doug sent you…maybe he’ll give me a free piece of (home made!) baklava :P

This place is great. The service is wonderful, extremely quick, and the food amazing. You also get a lot of food for the money. I would suggest the lamb platter as well as the lemon rice soup. I

I took my family to the subway at 29486 Woodward in Royal Oak, MI for an evening meal. When we arrived the sign on the door stated that they were open until midnight, and the current time was 5 minutes past 10. We proceeded to enter and were rudely asked what we wanted. No sooner did we finish paying and we were told to leave because the employees “want to leave sometime tonight!” We ate our food, which was fair at best, outside in the car where several employees were socializing with their friends and making lude comments. I’ve never been this dissappointed with any resteraunt, for both service and food quality.
