Super Bowl Volunteers Needed

The World is Coming – Get in the Game is coordinating a major Super Bowl clean-up event on October 22 from 9 am – 1 pm.

If you’d like to help ensure that Detroit is looking its best in time for the huge February football event, register here.

For more information, check out the post I wrote about this event yesterday on my own blog, Girl in the D.

Hope to see you there!

This whole “clean-up” “fix-up” for 1 week of football really rubs me the wrong way.

Remember that scene in Mel Brooks’ “Blazing Saddles” when they construct a competely phoney town of plywood buildings and people? Is that the Detroit for Superbowl 2006? Maybe we should dress up all the vagrants in tuxedos and gowns… fill the fountain at Campus Martius with champagne… Instead of a broom and a coat of paint for a week’s scrutiny by the couch potato crowd, we should be looking at real solutions for the community.

I think that there are real solutions going on in Detroit : ) But, there’s nothing wrong with doing a little bit of clean up before we have thousands of visitors in Detroit. Plus, volunteer events like this build community and civic spirit.
