sayin’ ya to duh U.P.

Michigan has this wierd finger-shaped “backyard” called the Upper Peninsula. I’ll be real honest here and admit that I don’t think of it as being part of our state very often. I mean I still don’t get why we own the U.P. and not Wisconsin. Iif possesion is nine tenths of the law, then we are screwed. We have a bridge connecting us to our nothern state mates; meanwhile Wisconsin has hundreds of miles of honest-to-God border. In any event, I will be heading to the UP this weekend to sit naked in front of a fire and scream primaly as I wipe fresh animal blood on my face. For kicks I will draw on some cave walls to throw off the archeologists. At the very least I will shake off the shackles of RSS feeds, PDA and the ever menacing TPS reports, and come back smelling like a blend of dirt and smoke.

My dad was a survival instructor for the US Air Force, and as a result, I got some early experience camping, or “roughing it” as he put it. My current lifestyle doesn’t permit me to sleep under the stars too often, but I enjoy it when I can. I love the city, and its wildness; but there is something that is just right about getting out into the untouched (or gently used) wilderness and eating the direct product of your hands, smelling like men have smelled for epochs prior to Degree ™, and talking with friends – not watching “friends.”

I’ll be back on Monday, unless I get eaten by a bear or shot by a big, mean, conservative, gun totin’, Bambi thumpin, NRA member! ;) [pokes Tiki]

Well, odds are you won’t be shot by some panty-waist liberal like me, right?

Michigan, and not Wisconsin, has the UP because a deal was struck in which the Mitten State gave up any claims on Toledo. I’d say we came out far ahead on that deal.

But you knew that already, eh?

You know, whats funny is that the UP is predominantly Democrat and Liberal. Both their members of Congress and their State House/Senators are Dems…it has a lot to do with their Union heritage up there. So, I wouldn’t worry about getting shot up there by a Conservative…I would be worried about getting shot up there for being a “Troll from under the bridge”! :)
