Day After Columbus Day

Columbus Day is a confusing day for me. Throughout grade school I read in books and was told that Christopher Columbus founded America. Wow, I used to think, this guy was great. Now I sit here much more educated on the history of the United States and more educated on the Indigenous people that were born and raised in North America, the actual “founders of America”. This great city of Detroit played a key role in the survival and expansion of the American Indians. Detroit was a major trading post for furs that came from inland Michigan and the surrounding area. The Detroit River allowed the different tribes to travel up and down to move their goods. This waterway connected tribes from Northern New York to the northern banks of Michigan and Canada. Detroit today still has indigenous blood running through its vains. Anyone interested in bulking up on the local history and Native American facts can visit many museums and cultural centers here in Detroit and Michigan. A good link for these locations is http://www.500nations.com/Michigan_Places.asp
