Daylight Saving Time Ends on Sunday

Just a reminder that Daylight Saving Time ends this Sunday at 2 am.

You’ll have to set all of the clocks in your house back an hour and don’t forget to do the same with wristwatches.

This is also a good time to change the batteries in any smoke alarms/carbon monoxide detectors in your house or apartment.

Good Marketing?

There is a billboard on the west side of I-75 north that I pass by every day on my way to work. It has a picture of a Ford Explorer on it and the message

Funeral Arrangements for Rosa Parks

I am only including the Detroit details as the DC ones don’t seem solid yet.

From Monday night till Wednesday morning, she will lie in state at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History. Her funeral will be on Wednesday, November 2nd at 11am at Greater Grace Temple Church.

She will be buried next to her husband, mother and brother in Woodlawn Cemetary.

The front seat of Detroit buses have been draped with black ribbons in remembrance of Rosa Parks.

Mostly to make Mollika smile

Back in March, I convinced Mollika to go on a great and relatively cheap adventure to San Francisco. (How it was cheap is discussed over on my blog – look in March’s archives) Yes, the rumors are true, I made the poor girl walk all over the city but she saw and experienced things she and I will never forget.

Anyway, I had heard rumors of an ad filmed in San Francisco featuring thousands of bouncy balls. I had even seen photos on flickr, but I had no clue what the ad was about. Now, I know and oh, do I love the ad. It is for Sony BRAVIA, a new LCD screen. But whatever..the ad features great shots of San Francisco and thousands of bouncy balls bouncing down the hills.

Did you know we met Joann of SF Metblogs while we were there too? She is a really nice lady.

What does this have to do with Detroit? Nothing really – other than it is midterm season for all the college students and they need a good laugh/smile. It made me forget all about my accounting midterm the other night. Now I am trying to think of a cool place in Detroit to drop a bunch of bouncy balls and see where they go..

SOON: Tree Lighting and Ice Skating at Campus Martius

SkateRentals.JPG

November 18th will be an extra special day to visit Campus Martius Park. The Christmas tree lighting ceremony will take place (I heard it’s a 50 foot tree this year) as well as the opening of the ice skating rink.

Today was a pretty nice day for the construction crew to put together the structure for the skate rental hut. High winds in the previous days made the work much tougher (and perhaps dangerous!)

For klutzes like me, do they have such a thing as “training-wheels” for skates?

Now That’s a Very SMART Car…

RubicCar1.JPG

Spotted on the street, I can only conclude it must be the prototype for a new car appealing to the baby-boomer market. I’ve nicknamed it, the RubiCar, after its smarty-pants predecessor, the Rubic’s Cube. For those of you who are too stink’n young to know what I’m talking about, back in the 80’s there was an evil Hungarian mad-scientist who developed a torture device so sinister, that it reduced most of us to the level of “mental vegetable” [see photo below].
RubicCube.JPG

I stuck around to see who was driving this vehicle. Hours later, I watched as it’s owner spent 25 minutes manipulating the hood-section 90 degrees, turning the left tire 3 times, and rotating the front-left bumper a half-turn, before the driver’s side door opened. He sped off before I could approach with any questions.

Better Order Your Fresh Kill Turkey Soon

TomTurkey.JPG

Halloween is just around the corner, but don’t forget to order up your fresh live thanksgiving turkey – FAST!

Huron Turkey Farm – out in Romulus, is our place of choice (as introduced to me by my wife). Helen Toth runs this 1,300 gobble compound, where the smallest bird you can probably get (and I know because we’ve asked many times for sometihng smaller) is 22-25 pounds!

If you’re a bit … queezy about the process of bringing home a freshly killed gobbler, send your wife (like I do – I’m such a wimp)… Basically, when you’re ready to pick up your turkey, you go to the counter, a guy comes out and hands you this warm, heavy parcel – you leave feeling a bit guilty, hopefully the vegetarians mobs outside have taken a lunch-break…(kidding)

We had a 25 pounder last year and it barely fit inside the oven… that was with all the interior racks removed!

Method of preparation… we go with the Salt-Water Turkey Pickling Process (Brining)– basically you fill up a big soda cooler with ice, boxes of kosher salt and your bird. You close the hatch and let it steep overnight, and by morning, you’re all set to cook (unless you like your turkey RAW – you sicko!) The result: DELICIOUS. You’ll never go back to defrosting the frozen turkey-brick again!

Go White Sox!

Congratulations, Chicago White Sox!

A little advice from one (Red) Sox fan to another (White) Sox fan. This next year will be difficult. You feel like you know you won, but really you are still in shock. This is what you’ve been waiting for your entire life and now that it is here, you know you should party. Yet, you aren’t fully enjoying the party because you just don’t know how to act. What is baseball now without a curse? What do you yell when the team plays awful? How do you console yourself when they lose the big game?

For me, the reality didn’t set in till December of last year. I could finally accept with no sense of disbelief that the Red Sox had won. Now it is your turn.

Next year, you will be faced with an overload of fad fans. People cheering for your beloved team solely because they are on top. You’ll know them because they won’t have the look a wearied fans, the scars of the heartbreak and their caps won’t be worn in. They won’t be able to name the heros and zeros of the team. They won’t understand the emotionally attachment you have to a simple game. And most of all, they will force you to defend your long-time devotion to your Sox.

Welcome to the curse-breaking, winners circle. I wanted the Red Sox to repeat, but I am nearly as happy you did.

Fall in the City

Fall is easily one of my favorite times of the year. I
