    Presumably, Midtown Detroit was once just as safe as Birmingham and many of the surviving institutions came from that era… the rest is somewhat derivative of what remains. Ok, there’s plenty of cool stuff that’s started in Midtown since its most “dangerous” times, things you’ve mentioned, but it’s hard to imagine that area today if it had never been once a different kind of place.

    There was some kind of a Regional Chamber report that showed that the crime level in the 2 square mile area that is classified as ‘Downtown Detroit’ had lower per-capita crime rates than the similar 1 square mile area classified as ‘Downtown Birmingham’…but since they are a “Regional” Chamber…that report won’t be released saying that…
