Power Outage

A DTE substation fire has taken down power from essentially Woodward to Conner, including the tunnel. Expect traffic issues this afternoon. No word on when power would be restored.

I heard that even my apartment building is without power.

Update at 1:45pm – Channel 4 is saying power has been restored. Can anyone verify this?

Gas Prices

They say when you are at a loss for conversation that it is best to stick with the weather. I feel that gas prices are quite in the same category. It seems that gas prices get no love when they are good, unlike the weather. I must say that I love having filled up at $2.03 for the past couple of weeks at Meijer. I love that the prices didn

En Garde

Wayne State University is hosting the Istvan Danosi Michigan Open at the Matthaei Athletics Complex on Saturday, Dec. 3. The tournament begins at around 9 a.m. and ends at about 2. Last year I had the fortune to train with the WSU women’s and men’s fencing teams and they are fierce. In a room full of national champions you are sure to be awed.

Fun with cops

So this morning, a nice young lady decided the Jeep needed a dent in the rear. She was even nice enough to stop under the pretense of exchanging insurance information until I mentioned we needed to call the police for a report. Then she hightailed it north. Too bad for her I got her plate number.

The fun though occurred when the police finally showed up an hour after I called them. Now I was in the ‘burbs so I figured it wouldn’t take that long. Heck, when the Jeep was broken into in August, Detroit PD showed up in five minutes. Not the cops in this burb… one whole hour later, he showed up to take my report, which took all of five minutes. He even found time to ask why anyone would move from Farmington Hills to Detroit? Err, cause I wanted to. I happily mentioned the fact my Jeep’s lock had been jacked in Farmington Hills.

Are there unsafe parts of Detroit? Of course, but you can usually tell when you are someplace you shouldn’t be. And what is up with cops recommending you walk around with a gun in Detroit? I know of two other friends who had a cop in Detroit tell them to carry a gun. Um, no thank you. Carrying a gun won’t make me feel any safer.

Argh…

Detroit’s Economy Based on the One-Armed Bandit

SlotmachineDetroit.JPG

During the mayoral election, Kwame Kilpatrick stated that Detroit is transitioning “from a manufacturing economy to a casino economy.”

Heck, everytime we drive on Detroit’s pothole strewn roads, we’re taking chances. Whenever a new business opens up under the Sword of Damocles that is taxes and low residential population they’re taking chances. Detroit has been taught to be a “casino lifestyle”

Currie wants a recount

Soon to be former City Clerk Jackie Currie has asked for a partial recount of the votes. It was her office in charge of the elections yet now she, herself, is expressing concern over the legitimacy. Granted a lot of questions have been raised and stories keep coming up about how votes are still be found, but all that should just be more reason for her to step aside. Detroit needs real election reform and right now a new City Clerk is the best thing.

Put me in, as coach!

Mooch is done. He had his chance to take a struggling group of future stars and make them stars today. He failed. And as long as Millen is pulling the strings the Head Coach of the Detroit Lions will always fail. Everyone knows this. And since we all know this why not hire me. I will lead this group of warriors. It might not be to victory, but we will have fun none the less. We will run deep outs. Run options. Flee Flickers. The Tight ends and full backs will crush through the line. The receivers will complete routes before the ball is thrown to them. The running backs will get to run with the ball. I have no coaching experience and have never played football. But I can play to the media and can motivate the players. The Detroit Lions could go down in the history books as the team that took a chance, instead of the team that had no chance. If the Lions lose with me as head coach then its ok, they tried something that no other team has. But if we won, even one game, we would go down in history! Junior, let me know what you think!

Unusually warm

After last week’s snow fall, it seems like winter has more than made its entrance.

But, as we all know, there’s always a chance for something extraordinary in Detroit.

That’s especially true today, as weather forecasters anticipate temperatures in the high 50s and low 60s in the Metro Detroit area.

Don’t worry, skiiers – this is only a one-day thing. Personally, I will be enjoying it to the fullest extent.

Parade chatter

With the high winds grounding the parade balloons, you have to wonder how the balloon team volunteers kept themselves entertained? I know they walked and all but how boring when you expected to anchor a balloon. Well, one team decided to take the Mayor’s float when he abandoned it for a photo op. (Apparently he left in front of the DIA, which last I knew was essentially the starting point)

The Mayor’s Office and the Parade Company are apparently saying they approved the takeover but the Unit Marshal for the team says otherwise.
