Fuzzy math in Detroit
As MGal mentioned this morning, Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick announced yesterday more of his plan to balance the city’s budget. The mayor wants to close Detroit’s Historical Museum, transfer ownership of the Detroit Zoo to a non-profit organization and lay off 441 workers.
It’s important to mention that these cuts and actions – totaling roughly $39 million – that the mayor spoke to City Council about today are only going to resolve part of the budget deficit problem: the short-term gap that is breathing down the city’s neck.
In about seven months – June 30, to be exact – the city must close its long-term deficit – estimated at $100 million or more.
What absurd closures will we hear about as that date draws closer?
