Lions: Marinelli?

yesterday Lions President Matt Millen hired defensive line coach Rod Marinelli as the new head coach… who!?!?!

to me this hire seemed a bit rash, but it appears that the players didn’t like Haslett (from the Saints) and Grimm (from the Steelers) didn’t want the job… so maybe Millen was just going with the best of what was left???

my biggest qualm: according to the Detroit News, “Marinelli never has been a head coach and never has coordinated an offense or a defense. In fact, most of his experience is in college, at Utah State, California, Arizona State and Southern Cal, before joining Tampa Bay in 1996″… ouch… at the same time, Dre Bly, an important defensive component, team leader, and winner liked the choice, so that says something (kinda)…

the pluses: he’s tough, a disciplinarian and is defensive minded… i think those are all qualities that Millen’s past 2 hires didn’t have…

who knows how this will turn out… we have a long way until we find out, and Lord knows we couldn’t stand another dismal season…

Marinelli? Just more proof that Millen needs to go.

The strangest thing I have noticed is that the local Detroit media is bashing Millen’s decision, while the national media is accepting it. Those who have worked around Marinelli say he is qualified to be a great head coach. Yet, locals like Parker and Sharp have criticized the decision. We can only hope that they are wrong and that Millen finally chose a good coach.

Detroit media is bashing Millen because he’s done a poor job, but also because that’s what sells…

i read Sharp’s critique… everything he writes is critical in some way or another, but actually, he hinted at some sort of hope for this guy…

it really can’t get worse… it can just stay the same…

Nobody knows what’s going to happen. You can only consider the lessons we’ve learned from the past which are the Ford’s make poor choices in GM’s and the GM’s make poor choices in hiring coaches.

You figure they’ve got to get lucky sometime and accidentally hire a good coach. Maybe this was it!
