Saturday wanders…

Wandering through the Winter Blast area allowed for some interesting people watching. From the out of towners to the locals playing tour guide. The irony of a surburbanite “ambassador” welcoming me to Detroit.

Yea, I know it is all good but as I walked I couldn’t help but wonder if these people would come back downtown, when there were no festivities. If they would come down just to enjoy Campus Martius on a Saturday. Detroit shouldn’t just be a special events visit – it should be a regular trip into the city.

And as I responded to one man, who in a state of surprise as my friends walked into the Kales Building, said “People actually live down here?” Yes, some people do live here and we love it.

I agree with you largely, and can definately appreciate the irony that you point out – but it sounds a little like you want them to visit the city more often; and then look over your nose when they do. This constant us-versus-them with the suburbs, subtle or otherwise, hurts everyone.

No, I want them to come to Detroit to enjoy the city, not just partake in special events. Come down to check out the regular exhibits at the musuems, walk the riverwalk in warmer weather, enjoy the concerts at Chene Park or the ice rink.

I don’t care where they are from, just come enjoy the city year round.
