Industry Notes

I am a pro industry person, meaning the hotel/restaurant/bar industry. Living downtown, I frequent many establishments. At times my suburban pals ask me where are some cool places to go in the City. So for those who are just visiting or who might live outside the City, “these are a few of my favorite things.”

Sundays are my favorite day of the week. German breakfast at Jacobys on Brush with german pancakes and sausage. Wash it all down with a glass of Cab’ and Mmmm. Tastes like candy!
After that it’s down the street to Sweet Water’s at Brush and Congress with some friends. There are usually some “Wise Guy” types at the bar and even though the manager is not connected to the mob at all, his name is Jimmy Cheese. Cool name for a cool guy.

Monday nights find me at the Jazz Loft on Monroe. Little obscure club above the Golden Fleese. Great music by the Phil Harmonic Trio. Great mix of horns, strings and vocals. Starts late, usually 11PM. but it’s worth it.

Thursdays it’s the new Dodge on Joseph Compau in Hamtramck. RJ Spangler plays that night with his great band. Thornetta Davis, Cee Cee Collins and Alberta Adams sometimes sit in for a set or two.

Hoped I wet your wistle a little. . .can’t tell you EVERYTHING can I??

No list of Detroit establishments that mentions the word “jazz” can leave out Baker’s lounge at 8 mile and Livernois – they claim it is the world’s oldest continually operated jazz club. It is really cool – but BE CAREFUL, the coffee is sold by the freaking cup! I spent $16 on coffee, not knowing this; but that’s my ONLY complaint!

    Great list Rickus!
