Fat Tuesday = paczki

300px-Ponczki.jpg

Here in Detroit, Fat Tuesday means paczki, which are deep-fried dough filled with jam or something similar. To the unintiated (like me four years ago), they resemble a jelly doughnut, but don’t be fooled. They are no such thing.

If you’ve waited till today to find a paczki, you could be out of luck. All the best Polish bakeries will probably be sold out, but if you want to try, Hamtramck Star has a list of the places you can get paczki (list). Worst case, I have seen them sold in Meijer and Kroeger before.

So where do you get your paczki?

If you’re only looking for one, you might try New Dodge Lounge. There is a free Polish buffet today, bands, and the Fire Department will be there serving Jello shots. Tight Fittin’ Jeans or Whiskey in the Jar will probably have some too.

If you would rather eat a whole box, the 6th Annual Paczki Eating Contest will begin at noon at the Knights of Columbus. The winner last year ate 22 paczki in 15 minutes.

I got mine from the New Palace Bakery on Jos Campau. Yummy. Make sure you order ahead of time and pick them up or else you’re going to be in a nasty line!
