Autorama 2006
Last weekend my parents and I attended the 2006 Autorama at Cobo Hall. WE have attended this event for 4 years now and this year was the best.
The main attraction for us was the Pinstripers Jamboree. Pinstripers from around the world gathered in the center of Cobo Hall to Stripe up everything from bowling pins to sheet metal to bicycles. Once completed these works of art were auctioned off for a charity (i cannot recall the charity at this time). I myself own an original piece by “VanZandt. The man that organized this fiasco was Yosemitte Sam. My parents ran into him last summer and had him Stripe their 48 Chevy truck. He Striped up some flames that are amazing.
The other attraction this year were the Rat Rods. In the basement of Cobo Hall the black booted, slick back haired, rolled up pant legged, tatt bearing cult of chopped, patched, gutted, dropped, bare metal rods gathered. The theory of less is more could not be more important to this group of rodders. They have taken anything from early 1920’s shells to 1950 mercurys and turned them into mean, simple, fast and cool.
Rumor has it Joe Gibbs was even wandering around the Hall and had a car of this own.
I look forward to see what this event holds for us next year.
a good friend of mine was one of those stripers, a guy named Jeff Shea. not only is he a bad ass with a paint brush but he’s also an amazing tattoo-ist. he’s one of the owners of ES Kustoms tattoo shop in Troy.
I think im ready for my first tat! Maybe I will look him up! Does Jeff sell any striped work?
yeah, i’ve seen him stripe some pretty odd stuff that people taken to him (besides cars) and as for ink, he was voted “tattoo-ist of the year” a couple years back in the Real Detoit. their official shop site isn’t up for their new location yet so they’re running off of one of his partners personal site. all the info about the shop is on there. http://WWW.JIMELITWALK.COM it’s a cool shop based on the whole custom car/ratrod theme and all theY do is kustom tattoos. real good guys for sure.
