Lions: QB drama
well, to the delight of many Joey Harrington will be out of town in no time… the Lions signed former Cincinnati Bengal’s QB Jon Kitna to a 4 year contract this past weekend and about an hour ago it was announced that former Arizona Cardinals QB Josh McCown signed a 2 year deal with the Lions…
what i like about it: i like how we’re starting all over with a clean slate at the QB position… maybe our young wide-outs need a fresh face… i also like how they’ve got two fairly decent quarterbacks who are going to slug it out for the starting spot…
what i dislike about it: i don’t like the way the organization treated Joey… 2 weeks ago they were going on and on about how they’d found their starter in Joey, only to turn around and sign 2 other guys for the same position… why’d they have to be dishonest with him??? however, i suppose it’s possible that when Joey met up with Martz, they clashed and decided that it wasn’t ever going to work (if that’s the case, you can add it to my “what i like about it” category)…
what i expect to happen: Joey Harrington will go on to have a successful career… the Lions have a knack for making players worse than they actually are… there are numerous examples of players who left the Lions and went on to have great careers (i.e. – Lomas Brown and Jeff Hartings)… imagine how much even greater Barry Sanders might’ve been if he weren’t a Lion???
i don’t think the Lions ever gave Joey a fair chance… he never had a coach that wanted him… he was never put in an offense that suited his abilities… he never had a good offensive line… he never had a good running game… his receivers constantly dropped balls… i’m not saying that Joey is awesome or that he even proved himself in any way, shape or form… but how can you expect someone to prove themselves when you have nothing good to work with???
as for the Lions??? it wouldn’t surprise me if they still stunk after all the goings on so far this offseason… not that that’s what i want, but that’s just the way it’s been…
I don’t think the Lions are ready to replace Joey yet. We’ll just have to deal with him for a season or two… Hopefully these additions can make the contest for starter interesting. Jeff Garcia and Joey were battling it out last season, but Garcia broke his leg in the final preseason game. Let’s wipe out the past, and start over with a whole new offensive system – Mike Martz to the rescue!
i hope martz can rescue us, but i dunno… joey ain’t gonna stick around for this… if he doesn’t, they’ll cut ’em…
