Vegetarian suggestions?
Like I need another favourite restaurant. This week my friend and I had a challenge finding alcohol-free and vegetarian meals at restaurants. Any suggestions?
Breakfast House Recommendation . . .
All I have been doing since I moved to Detroit is eating out . . . I cannot help myself. Everything is so tasty. I am pleased to say that I did visit The Detroit Breakfast House & Grill based on the rave reviews from this site. It is really posh and worth the 1 hour wait from the time I got on the list at 2:00 Sunday afternoon to the time I got my food. The service was unbelievably good.
Thornetta and her Band
I’ve talked about the Thornetta Davis Band before. She is an amazing blues singer with an outstanding band behind her. For the past few years, she has been at the Attic Bar in Hamtramck every Wednesday night. Unfortunately that ends this month. They have yet to make certain where their next home venue will be (according to guitarist Brett, it will probably be the Buzz Bar). I suggest you come out tomorrow night. It could also make for a good meetup of the metbloggers. You know I’ll be there.
Let them eat Corned Beef and Cabbage
Following the traditional lead of the Cardinals in Boston and Chicago, Cardinal Maida has granted all members of the Archdiocese of Detroit permission to eat meat this Friday (aka St Patrick’s Day). Unlike some of the other diocese, Cardinal Maida has not requested parishioners to abstain from meat this Wednesday in exchange.
Cardinal Maida simply ask parishoners to remember to perform some simple acts of penance (prayers, fasting, abstinence are the traditional ones) during this Lenten Season.
Greektown
When I first moved to the suburbs, Greektown was the only reason I was told was a good enough one to venture into the city. I am afraid that this is where most of my money gets dropped. Why must it be so conveniently located on the Peoplemover route? Thus far, I love Hellas, Olympius, Pizzapopulous, and my latest love is Astoria (thank you MGal). It is incredible how long people will wait on game days for food. What’s your favourite restaurant in Greektown?
Bleu
This past Friday I went out clubbing for the first time since becoming an official resident. It was quite painful as I went from paying $3 cover and paying nothing for my parking and diet cokes all night in the suburbs to dropping $30 on parking, cover, and coat check all before I walked through the door. However, this is quite the bargain if you’re looking for a night out in a big city. Bleu was a really nice club with a great layout and sweet decor. Friday night promoters had rented the club out to showcase their up and coming recording artists, which was a treat at the end of the night.
Corktown Parade…
Can anyone else believe the incredible weather we had for the Corktown Parade yesterday? True, by the end it was windy, chilly and enough heavy clouds had rolled in to obscure the view of downtown, but it was a great time. Heck, we all ended up with sunburns on our faces.
So what did you think of the parade and weather this weekend?
Another side of the coin
In a previous post, Baliad mentioned an interesting experience with one of the many panhandlers in town. I was thinking about it yesterday when my father and I went to Eastern Market. As usual we were approached by men asking for money, but one took a different and refreshing approach. He approached my father asking for a hot meal. My father looked confused about what to do, so the man took out his wallet, showed him his driver’s license to prove who he was. This alone was new to me but I let my father decide what he wanted to do.
My father went to give the man a few dollars, but instead of taking them, the man took my father to where he wanted a meal from. There he pointed it out and let my father pay directly. He really did want a hot meal but it was his approach that made the difference. The man’s honesty was refreshing and heart warming.
Fateless
The DFT is showing the Hungarian film Fateless this weekend. Wow, what a powerful film. I believe the film will haunt me for years to come and I am now driven to find the book. Some may look at it and think “Another film about the Holocaust?” but this particular film is in a class of its own. It ranks with Schindler’s List as one of the most powerful and important films about the Holocaust.
My father is in town visiting, so a trip to the DFT is mandatory. It is from my father I developed my love for film. In fact, he taking a very early morning flight tomorrow, simply so we can go to tonight’s showing of The Big Parade (silent film with live piano) at the DFT.
If you haven’t been tot the DFT, you need to make time to go. This season is packed with amazing, heartbreaking, memorable films. You’ll be glad you found the time. It is unlike any other movie experience you’ll ever have.
