for me it's not a matter of how high i'll put up with but rather when i will re-direct my spending to afford gas rather than something else. i have to drive, public transpo just is not an option but eating at home one more night a week is.

It would be high. I can't just compare the cost of gas. I have to compare the cost of time, as well. Right now I have a 1.5 hour commute round-trip. Mass transit would at least double that. I can't afford to take 4 hours out of my day just for commuting. And I'm pretty sure buses dont run after 2, so there would go the bar or late-night diner visits.

My threshold would be quite high, probably $4.50 a gallon, because I only drive around 13,000 miles a year, make a decent salary, but most importantly because I drive fuel-efficient vehicles. 30 mpg highway has been my minimum requirement for the last 10+ years mostly out of environmental concern, but I spend half as much on gas as a person who drives a typical truck-based SUV that gets 16 mpg on the highway. (Plus I spend less time pumping gas). And if gas did top $4.50, I would probably buy a motorcycle or scooter for the summer months and for trips that aren't too far, I would definitely ride my bicycle.
