The D. vs. NYC in T.O.

I was in Toronto for the weekend and went out to the club on Friday night. At the end of the night a random guy was not taking “no” for an answer from one of the girls in our group. He was trying to impress her by telling her he was from New York. She points out that I am from Detroit. He hesitantly reconfirms that I am actually from Detroit, backs off, apologizes profusely, and then leaves. It may have been an isolated incident but it was quite an unusual power trip for me – a 5’3″ girl – to instill such fear because I happen to live in Detroit.

I lived in Toronto for a year and all I had to do was mention that I was from Detroit to get that slightly horrified but respectful eyebrow-raise. I’m fairly sure Detroit is their idea of Hell.
