WDET Hiring?

This morning, WDET was advertising the fact they have two new openings available if you want to join the WDET Team. WHAT? They just laid off a bunch of people and now they are hiring? They didn’t say what kinds of positions were open but a quick search of the WDET site brings up these:

Development Director

Morning Edition Host

    Wow! thanks for the lead…

I gave them a call this morning, and they offered me the position of “Morning Edition Host” – apparently they were desperate for someone to take the spot, and they’d hire anyone…

so… each morning, from 7am – 10am you’ll hear me talking about Petanque on the radio…

Hmmm Development Director… That’s what MC was supposed to be famous for… Is MC covering his Butt.. He can say to the Univ now.. I fired the last unsucessful person but now we are on the right track… Careful MC there might still a train wreck in the cards….

Then Morning Edition Host… Let’s see if this Noah fellow (remember — I read here — he was a volunteer or something like that working in the news Dept) get the position….. Just speculating of course…

Guess it does not matter.. The Board of Gov’s still stand by this guy… But… maybe.. there is a train wreck in the making… if the funds from pledges continue to fall.. they might step in…. Thats the only thing that will drive them…

    Well time will tell…

I must ask if anyone remembers this.. When this all started.. While doing a web search.. I came upon a web page.. BY John Penny no less.. It could have been completely bogus.. But it contained a whip lashing for WDET and WSU.. In this the author claimed that some Board of Gov’ member made a personal donation to WSU to the tune of millions and there must have been a general agreement and accepatance by the Board of Gov’s to acaquience to the changes, which quickly followed at WDET… Anyone else ever come in contact with such a rumor ?? Could this have happened ??? Seems the Board will stand by this MC regardless… That one time web search still stands in my memory…

Anyone know of John’s where abouts ??? Anyone know John to ask ?? Just curious…..

    Take Care…

I think you misread what John Penny wrote or he misunderstood the situation. Apparently one member of the board made a $5000 donation to WDET and Michael Coleman was throwing around fast and loose that the Board was likely to earmark funds from Wayne’s general fund for WDET. The general fund money never materialized.

I’m very curious to see how the Board treats Coleman as everything shakes out. Clearly WSU Marketing VP is standing behind Coleman and that probably means Irv Reid as well but Wayne’s Board of Governors doesn’t get involved in day-to-day operations of individual departments. That’s not really their job. However at some point they will have to consider Coleman and the situation at WDET, should be interesting.

As for the jobs, WDET’s previous development director left in December. No disrespect to that person, but the station’s development department needed a shake-up. I’ve stated this before but a disportionate amount of the station’s funding came from listener donations. WDET had almost zero major grant funding.

Efforts to filled the position have failed at best. In fact the rumor around the station was several people have turned the job down because either the Coleman indictment scared them away or they weren’t offered enough money. Good non-profit development people are worth their weight in gold.

As for Morning Edition, Wayne State has made it difficult for the new department to recruit a quality candidate. I doubt it would be Noah Ohvrat..I mean…Ovshinsky but nothing would surprise me.

Thanks Jeff… Hope you move on well….

Well I suspected much of what you helped with.. So far the board has not really gotten invloved but at some point they might be forced to re consider… Cost to support the funding shortfalls will drive them….

But now what are the stations options ??? I felt that WDET’s best nitch was AA music.. They had the oppourtunity to completely own AND BUILD on that segment in SE MI…. I remember when they announced pledges from all over.. Way over in Canada.. They had faithful listeners across Lake Erie… With the terrible cookie cutter music quality of todays commercial radio, AA is choice / prime territory. And yes sattilite will cut into that.. But it was not clear to me that WDET needed to abandon their roots… And what they do with ‘talk’ is quiet un inspiring… But perhasp ther are enought listeners to justify their new direction…

Now.. Not only did WDET fragment its listernship and very much piss us off (evident by the landslide negative comments here and their ((so far)) fall off in pledges) WDET now has a bigger up hill battle if they attempt to go back to a music format in any form….

Namely.. MArtin B (wether you like him or not) is at another station and he will draw some % of music listeners even if WDET attempts to restore music during his slot… I can’t get 107.1 on the east side so I don’t know what the rest of their daytime broadcast is like…

Then you have WRCJ… That station will draw some further % of possible listeners… Actually WRJC’s jazz program is a refreshing alternative to Ed’s show.. They won’t necessarily add more jazz listeners in SE MI but might siphon jazz listeners away from Ed’s time slot…

While there is a trend in NPR radio to go to talk.. Time will tell if they choose wisely…. Oh well………….

(OH well is precisely what MC needs.. He needs everyone to surrender and forget)

Oh well.. Perhasp I’ll write another letter to the BOG… Especially if they come up short in the next pledge drive.. Did you notice his approach.. BE a friend BRING a friend… Can’t ask corporate sponsores to to match.. They Just did that a few months ago…

Thansk and Take Care… Maybey… Kick off a letter writing campaing to the BOG ???

Lets see.. When ?? I suggest after MC’s sentencing.. That will conincide with the completion of this upcoming pledge drive…. OK I’ll write a second letter to the BOG’s…

I’m finding it harder and harder to even listen to local parts of Morning Edition. How could all of this happen?

I just heard a rumor that John Moshier will be hosting some special program on WRCJ with former ‘DETers Ann Delisi and Chris Felcyn…does anybody know if this is true?

Will Michael Coleman be inviting his jail house friends to the “Bring a Friend” campaign?
