DeVos in Hour Detroit

my favorite Detroit publication has got to be Hour Detroit Magazine… it’s got good, unbiased articles, great pics and usually nothing too raunchy… the gubernatorial election is still months away, but it isn’t too early to start reading about the candidates… Channel 4’s Devon Scillian did a fine article on Dick DeVos… i personally didn’t know much about DeVos other than that he’s rich and that he practices a faith, but this article shed a little bit more light on who this guy is…i liked what Scillian had to say about DeVos’ views on urban education and how to help the state… i look forward to future articles about Granholm… anyways, issues aren’t available online, but for more reasons than one, i recommend picking up a copy of this months issue…

What did channel 4 say about DeVos on education? I don’t know that much about his positions on edu, but I do know that he supports vouchers and he and his wife spent something like 10 mill on a campaign for vouchers. 10 million dollars???!! That is crazy.

he supports vouchers and it was mentioned that he spent a load of money towards that… one thing that stuck out to me is that he is not against affirmative action… he said he couldn’t expect urban youth to go “toe to toe” with others knowing how bad the public schools are… that made me think…

But vouchers contribute to schools being bad because if kids are in districts that have bad schools, they can use their vouchers go bypass the public school system – and use tax payer dollars for private school tuition – doing nothing to help the public schools. So DeVos is totally disingenuous in his position. He acknowledges that urban public schools are bad and then supports a policy that would keep them bad. Go figure…

now see, i respect your viewpoint… that vouchers contribute to schools being bad… but not everybody agrees with that statement (and i have not stated whether or not i do)… to blatantly accuse DeVos of being totally disingenuous is in itself disingenuous… it isn’t out of the realm of possibility that DeVos truly does believe that vouchers are the better way to go… just because someone doesn’t agree with you or see things the way you see them doesn’t make them disingenuous, hypocritical or evil…

sorry… i have a low tolerance for divisive language, which may seem a bit disingenuous…
