Father’s Day Memo

Hey, it’s Father’s Day again and I wish all the father’s our there a great and enjoyable day! We are supposed to be able to do whatever we would like to do on this one day of the year so put that “honey do” list away, k?

Sanora Dodd of Washington first had the idea for Father’s Day after listening to a Mothers Day poem in 1909. Her father, a Civil War vet, raised six children alone after his wife died while giving birth to the youngest.

William Smart was born in June so Sanora decided to hold the first Father’s Day celebration in Spokane, Washington on June 19th, 1910.

In 1966 President Johnson signed a proclamation declairing the 3rd Sunday in June “Father’s Day.”

Now tha’t the history but this is the reality. Being a father is very cool!
I have been the head ramrod in my family for quite a while now. I have three grown children and three grandchildren so I can speak with some authority here. For those of you who have just recently applied for that job, you hit the lottery, you won the Stanley Cup, you ran for the roses and won the Derby. Here are a few of the things you can look forward to.

That first step on thier own. Which word will be first, Mama or Dada?? Taking the training wheels off and watching them cruise down the sidewalk with delight. Dressed to the nines for a prom. Graduations. Weddings, grandchildren and all manner of great memories. And God gave us this ingenious thing called the mind. We can recall those videos anytime we want.

Oh, and listen to this. They will take you to the limit every day or your life. There will always be some hurdle to jump, some problem to solve, anger, sorrow, sleepless nights, sickness and just plain bullpucky. LOL But most all there will be love. A love like no other.

To put it into perspective, everytime I hear Anita Baker sing, “I’ll Always Love You”, I think of my kids. Without them I would be far less fullfilled as a man, as a human being. Happy Father’s Day!!
