Kate Moss Sightings

Has anyone had a sighting of Kate Moss in Detroit? I have heard from a few sources that Kate Moss has been up and about town. One source tells me that she is in town shooting for W magazine. Does anyone have any hard facts? I was hoping it was something to do with starting up a fashion scene in the city.

WSU Press Celebrates 65 Years

Yesterday we celebrated Wayne State University Press’s 65th Anniversary at the Detroit Public Library. Celebrants were able to see the impact we have made on the city and scholarly publishing in general and were able to personally interact with many authors. Past and current board members and employees, authors, and Press supporters alike spent the evening sharing stories of their experiences with the Press over the years. I know I was especially excited to meet John Gallagher, one of the authors of AIA Detroit and Ellyce Field the author of the Detroit Kids Catalog. Both works sit in my car and uncover and guide many an adventure in the city.

holy cranes!

when driving northbound on M-10, right off of Jefferson, you’ll see somewhere between 7-10 cranes on the horizon… most of them are due to casino construction as both Motor City and MGM casinos are plowing away at their expansions and hotels… but i would be remiss not to note that there are several other cranes peppering the horizon in various other parts of the D…

yes, i’m the same author who wrote “building slowly?” which was about my fears that developments were slowing down and hopefully not ultimately collapsing altogether… that’s why i’m writing this article… too often someone in the media writes a story and it’s never followed up or if need be, corrected…

Be a Friend, Bring a Friend

WDET is usually a hot topic here, so I am wondering what you think of WDET’s Be a friend, bring a friend campaign? I am barely listening to WDET right now since the fund drives drive me batty.

There may be more listeners but why then aren’t they contributing?

NBA Gone Stale

The NBA has completly lost my interest. I started watching when I was 9 years old. Thats 20 years of watching bad calls, no calls, cry babies and way too much money spent on nothing.

The Pistons were not beaten by talent, they we out super star’d. It does not take a better basketball team, it takes a money making super star, or in the case of the Heat, 2 super stars to win a basketball game. I am not talking about skills, I am talking about money. The players that bring in the most money, will win the most games. This season was proof. The Miami Heat did not out play the Dallas Mavericks, they out super star’ed them, therefore made the NBA more money, therfore were given more games.

As I speak to people about their thoughts on the playoffs and the finals I find more often than not no one payed attention. They may have checked the stats on espn, but no one watched the games. Very few Detroiters even watched the Pistons. Not only did they not pay attention around here, Dallas Metblog has not even mentioned the fact that their team was in the finals. And the Miami Metblog just posted for the first time today with the time and date of the Celebration Parade and top billing in the post went to water.

David Stern has the fate of the NBA in his hands. If he lets this slip any more College Ball players will get paid to play and the TNT Basketball crew will have to cover play by play for next seasons Americas Got Talent side by side with David Hasselhof.

Severe weather this evening

Lenawee and Monroe counties are currently under a tornado warning until 6:45 and 7:30 this evening, respectively. Anyone in these two areas is urged to take cover immediately. According to the National Weather Service, the best place to do this in a home or business is in an interior room on the lowest floor possible. Windows should be avoided.

In addition, Lenawee, Livingston, Macomb, Monroe, Oakland, St. Clair, Washtenaw and Wayne counties are under a tornado watch until midnight this evening.

Be safe!

Metblogs Detroit would love to write about the auto industry but … we just don’t know enough about it. If you’re a proud union wrencher with a little wry insight or a big fat chip on his shoulder, we’d love to add you to our mix …

2006 International Tug boat Race this Saturday

My friend and fellow bouler, Captain Wade Streeter, mentioned to us at last Saturday’s petanque games about the International Tug Boat race happening this Saturday (June 24) along the Detroit river. I have never heard of it, and it sounds like great fun. 20-30 of these powerful working boats vie for the prize for speediest tug, and fastest by engine class.

Starting at 1:00 pm at the Ambassador Bridge, they make their way to the finish-line near Windsor’s Dieppe Park. 2,000 horsepower… think about it, makes those sports car engines on the Dream Cruise look like rubberband toys…

Wade captains the MAGNETIC, and since we’ll be playing petanque that Saturday along the river (at the GM Promenade) he’ll pass close by and sound a friendly toot-toot to the members. Good Luck Captain Streeter!
