An emergency blood shortage has been declared for southeast michigan
During blood shortages, like the national shortage that has plagued much of the country for many weeks, blood doesn’t even sit on the shelf for more than a few hours much less the 42-day life span of red blood cells. “Our O inventory, the universal blood type and one of the most critical to have available, has been close to zero for several weeks running. We have not been able to collect sufficient quantities to meet hospital needs here in southeast Michigan,” reports Diane Ward, CEO of the American Red Cross Southeastern Michigan Blood Services Region.
