Jazz on the Radio

I have a question for all you Metro Detroiters out there. After 7pm, the place to find jazz on the radio dial here is WDET, where Ed Love hosts probably the best jazz show in the United States and WRCJ plays some jazz too. However, I can’t seem to find any jazz on the FM dial before 7pm. Any suggestions? WRCJ plays classical during the day and WDET is an NPR affiliate during the day. (V98.7 doesn’t count)

    WEMU (89.1 fm) broadcasts jazz and blues all day long. It is the NPR affiliate from Eastern Michigan University in Ypsi. Its signal reaches western Wayne County, but unfortunately it cannot be received in many parts of the Detroit Metro area.

    It isn’t the radio, but if you need some good jazz, there is an excellent podcast called Detroit Jazz Stage. You can find it in the iTunes Podcast Directory (click here if you have iTunes). It usually comes out once a month, and it’s usually an hour long (mostly music, with some interviews of the musician in between sets).

    Just got back from lunch, listened to WEMU in my car. They played a few good songs, some blues, but then picked up the Terry Gross NPR show… Also, the host of WEMU was practically begging for money the whole time, sounds like WEMU is in rough shape financially (probably just like WDET).

    I’ve found some good stuff playing on 90.9 RCJ. I like Ed Love, but he sometimes gets repetive over the days.

    I agree that the radio isn’t the best place in general to listen, though… try “So they Say” down by Atwater brewery, Baker’s Keyboard Lounge or the Firefly in Ann Arbor…
