those on the east side and west side are both gettin' shafted right now, but if enough interest were shown, they might be willing to look at other routes... i don't anticipate this mass transit thing to come about quickly, i can tell you that much...

the Tiger train does seem like a step in the right direction! a good mass transit system does wonders for a city... during my recent trip to Hong Kong, i experienced the best mass transit system i've ever been on (compared to DC, Toronto, Chicago and LA)... Hong Kong's mass transit is actually a reason i'd go back to that city... it made everything accessible and easy... the D needs it...

I think this is great!
I spent a weekend in St Louis MO. I flew into the airport that is just outside of downtown St Louis (in the burbs). We took a light rail system from the airport to the Hotel located in the center of Downtown St Louis. It was very easy, convenient and clean (even seemed safe). When we boarded the rail system the cars were packed with people geared up in St Louis Cardinals Jerseys, Hats and shirts. I watched closely as the Burbanites boarded at each stop along the way. They were on their way to a ball game! And they were having a great time singing and exchanging stories of past games. Detroit needs this! And this Amtrak thing is a great step in the right direction. It builds a love for the city and tradition for the young Burbanite kids.

Yea! Yet another demonstration of the strong need and demand for enhanced rapid transit along the Woodward corridor. Sure, this one caters just to suburbanites for now, but a partnership between D-DoT, Amtrak and private business is remarkable. In 5 years or so, they could be taking light rail with express and local options to the games, AND stopping along the way for shopping, dinner, drinks afterwards, etc. This is just the kind of thing the Woodward Ave Action Association is talking about: http://www.metrotimes.com/editorial/story.asp?id=9379

Now, one can take this trip already on any one of the #400 SMART buses (express or local) (please vote to renew August 8!), but sometimes it takes a special option like this to get people started.
