Andiamo Riverfront

Last night, I went out to dinner with some friends and had a lovely dinner at Andiamo Riverfront.

I am a big fan of Andiamo in general - great food and excellent service - but especially like the location here in Detroit, which is located on the ground floor of the Renaissance Center.

We had a table right near the window, meaning we got a great view of The Romantics, who were playing at this week’s Rockin’ on the Riverfront concert.

Go Tigers

I haven’t been to a Tiger’s game since last season. It’s obviously no secret at this point that they are far better than they were last year.

Wedding Bells for Rock

Well, just when you thought it was safe to say that Pamela Andersen and home-town hero Kid Rock were positively over, the couple springs this kind of news on us.

Yep, that’s right - the rap-rocker from Romeo is marrying the Baywatch Babe. Or, at least that’s what the plan is, according to this Reuters press release.

Jazz on the Radio

I have a question for all you Metro Detroiters out there. After 7pm, the place to find jazz on the radio dial here is WDET, where Ed Love hosts probably the best jazz show in the United States and WRCJ plays some jazz too. However, I can’t seem to find any jazz on the FM dial before 7pm. Any suggestions? WRCJ plays classical during the day and WDET is an NPR affiliate during the day. (V98.7 doesn’t count)

Forum on Community Culture

I recently attended a citywide Forum on Community Culture, with panelists Anan Ameri (Director of the Arab-American Museum), Terry Blackhawk (Founder/Director of InsideOut Literary Arts Project), Tyree Guyton (Founder and Artist of the Heidelberg Project), Anne Parsons, (President of the DSO), Rick Sperling (Director of Mosaic Youth Theater), and Guest speaker Georges Collinet (Afropop radio)

Hello, River City!

Metroblogging just launched its 49th city: Sacramento!

Sacramento, California, that is; not to be confused with Sacramento, Illinois; Sacramento, Colorado; Sacramento, Kentucky; or, any of the other Sacramento cities in the U.S. and abroad.

Check out what’s going on in Sacramento here.

Ban those smokers?

“The debate is over. The science is clear. Secondhand smoke is not a mere annoyance but a serious health hazard,” US Surgeon General Richard Carmona said last week.

As I sit here infront of the tube enjoying my morning smoke and cup of Java, I wonder how many other things are “clear” that they are a serious health hazard.

MSU Plans to Return Israel Abroad Students

MSU has decided that students studying abroad in Israel should return to Michigan. This was decided from the recent air raid activity.

“They are not in any imminent danger in Jerusalem, but we just feel that the general situation in Israel is deteriorating and it is not certain that if it does get worse that we’ll be able to evacuate them if we need to,” Fairfax said. “We feel it’s best to end it now.”

Freep

The university also offered to bring back two students and a professor who traveled there independently. The students declined.

Should MSU have forced these students to return home or would it have been best to just offer the chance?

Update:
Doing a little more searching I found another article on the matter. The early departure is mandatory, however it only cut a week of studies. Granted the final week is one of the most crucial weeks of a semester, but MSU is trying to make it up by paying for the returning trip and setting up classes on campus to make up lost time. According to one of the students they did not want to leave so early considering the conflict is about 4 hours away.

Who is right for Detroit?

Over the weekend, the Detroit News published an article about the development trend in Detroit. The article quoted a number of soon to be new residents in the city. It also mentioned the increasing number of whites moving into the city.

Over on the DetroitYes board, there is a thread about the article (see: Heart of Detroit on a Roll?) Some posters feel that the people mentioned in the article aren’t the right type of people for Detroit, that they are only trend-followers, will be scared by the grit of the city and move out when it is time for a family, etc. Personally, I find that stance very arrogant because it means the poster assumes they are the “right person” for Detroit. You know what, Detroit needs all kinds of people - those who love the city more than anything, those who hate it but stay because it is home, those who are just a tad bit scared of its grit, those who live here for a few years after college and then move off to a new place and so on. There is no “right person” for the city - we need the trend-followers just as much as the hipsters, the long-time residents.

To be honest, I don’t plan on living in Detroit long term. I never have. I have always planned on living in Metro Detroit for as long as I felt necessary, but I also always knew I’d eventually leave. There is nothing wrong with the area. I just don’t see it as a long-term “home” for me. That doesn’t mean I am less committed to seeing the city grow and prosper. That doesn’t mean I am less important to it’s growth. It just means I am a different type of resident.

This argument of the “right type” for Detroit is as narrow-minded as the City vs Suburb arguments. Just as a metropolitan area needs city residents and suburbanites, the city itself needs all kinds of residents.
