Tom’s Oyster Bar

I had never been to Tom’s Oyster Bar on Jefferson, right across from the Renaissance Center. I have to admit that I had always assumed it was very ritzy, I’m guessing because of its location and blacked out windows. It is a pretty down to earth place with decent prices. The patio has an incredible view of the Renaissance Center and the People Mover passes almost directly overhead to my delight. I was so excited to find that they serve sushi; some pretty tasty sushi at that.

I’ve been to the Tom’s out in Grosse Pointe Park on Mack and was very disappointed. I thought the fish was overpriced and drinks were overpriced and the service we subpar. Our desert had mold on it and the waiter could do nothing but give us a free drink next time we came in! Needless to say, I wasn’t as impressed as you are.

My opinion on best place to get food downtown? One word, Vicentes.

I thought Tom’s was kind of a fine dining place too before I went there for the first time and was pleasantly surprised, also.

I have had the salmon there for dinner several times and it is always excellent. I also like the casual atmosphere and the location downtown is great. I have never been to the upstairs deck but will have to head over there before the summer season is over :)
