Schoolteachers, Jazz, and people on tightropes

There is so much going on in Detroit that nobody has posted about yet. Therefore, this is Detroit Metblogs first ever SUPER POST. Read more for all of it!

Jazz Fest
For all your poor jazz lovin’ people out there, the Detroit Jazz Fest [1] is happening downtown this weekend and it’s FREE! A couple of big acts playing on Saturday and Sunday night respectively (Jaco Pastorius, Buckwheat Zydeco, Taj Mahal). For me, this is the summer festival to be at. You better enjoy it before it starts snowing!

Schoolteachers on Strike
This was all over NPR today – the Public School teachers here in Detroit are on strike. Today, the administration chose not to fire everyone (they could have per the contract). This is yet another step in the collapse of public schools in the city, as they lose students hand over foot to suburban schools, charter schools, and private schools. Could Detroit be the first city to actually have a public school system go out of business?

Tightwalkers downtown?
I heard there were tightwalkers downtown today? What’s the story on that? I heard about it on the radio, but didn’t see anything in the press about it otherwise.
