Labor Day Weekend

Whew! What a great weekend to be in the D’! Although Hamtramack doesn’t qualify as part of the City, it’s close enough to mention. If you didn’t know, it was HAMTRAMACK DAYS this weekend and what a great time it is. Joseph Campau is closed off for amusement park rides and stages for entertainment, (think Polish Muslims!) and all sorts of venders selling dogs and sausages, beer, trinkets, art, T-shirts, etc.

I love Hamtramack as much as the City. It’s got a little bit of everything. Predominately Catholic but what other town has Veneration of the Cross on Good Friday and then goes to the Polish Sea League for a “Give us Barabas” party. What a hoot!

Beaming back to the City for the 27th season of the Detroit Jazz Fest it was a feast for the ears. You were in for a treat if you witnessed the fire works display on Saturday night. Far better than even the Freedom Festival. All the great artists known around the world were present to put on a spectacular plethera of site and sound. Highlights were The Temptations on Friday night at the Campus. Sergio Mendes with his mix of Bosa Nova and Hip Hop were way off the hook on Saturday.

Sunday night brought the headliner, Ahmad Jamal. The Amphitheater Stage was packed as the fans thrilled to “Poinciana.”, his signature and masterful piece. Then it was on to a jam session featuring, well, just about every body, at the Ren Cen from 11PM to about 1:30 in the morning. I’m talking goose bumps and shortness of breath here.

From Campus Martius to the Spirit of Detroit to Hart Plaza people were spontaniasly breaking out in dance and celebration the entire weekend, You had to laugh out loud, you had to smile from ear to ear to witness this free flowing right of jubillation.

If you missed Labor Day 06′ in the City, I hope it was for a good reason. Friends ask me all the time, “Is downtown as cool as they say?” I always answer, “Hey, did Rose Kennedy wear a black dress???”

    I believe Hamtramack does qualify.

I have to agree that Labour Day weekend 2006 was a really great time because I am living in the city. I did not merely have to rely on keeping the flies off the potato salad and I had plenty to keep me entertained.
