Detroit Shock Win WNBA Title

Congratulations go out to the Detroit Shock who won the WNBA title this evening.

The Shock beat the Sacramento Monarchs 80-75 in game 5 of the WNBA Finals, played at Joe Louis instead of the Palace of Auburn Hills because of a Mariah Carey concert this evening.

Deanna Nolan – Michigan’s Miss Basketball in 1995 – scored 24 points, Katie Smith had 17 and Plenette Piersen had 16. Cheryl Ford had another double double.

This is the Shock’s second title in four seasons.

That would explain the madness around Joe Louis. It is amazing how many great teams this city has.

That was a great crowd at the Joe, and a pretty good game. The WNBA might be a mess, but the city should be very proud of the Shock – those players do a ton for the community and inspire a lot of young girls.

I’m so excited for my girls! The word is the crowd at the Joe was the 2nd largest for a WNBA playoff game ever (the first being the championship game at the Palace when the Shock won three years ago).

I hope there’s a good turnout for the rally on Tuesday. I hear the Spirit of Detroit will be sporting a giant Shock jersey.
