Robbery at the Kronk = one low blow
When I heard that thieves broke into Detroit’s legendary Kronk Gym last week and stole the facility’s copper piping, I was utterly digusted.
The Kronk, which has survived the past eight months almost solely on the enormous genorosity of legendary Kronk-trainer and President Emanuel Steward, remained open after the city shut down the rec center that houses it last year as long as Steward agreed to continue running it and to submit a monthly fee to the city to pay for utilities. According to this article, Steward has been shelling out about $2000 a week to cover these expenses.
Last week, thieves broke in through a window and stole the gym’s copper piping, a low-blow to an already struggling Detroit landmark known throughout the world. Now, Steward isn’t sure whether he can re-open the gym because the stolen piping will cost $20,000 to 40,000 to replace.
Several Kronk amateurs are preparing for an upcoming tournament in California. Steward has moved the fighters to a facility in Dearborn for the time being, but is reportedly looking at a new space in Detroit to run the gym.
Agreed this is low, VERY low.
It’s always the little guy who gets the problems in Detroit, forcing them to leave the city.
Something must be done about this and other scrappings around the city
Probably the same guys who took the roof off of Lee Plaza.
Perhaps these thefts indicate a need for a Home Depot. What horrible creatures to be stealing from hardworking business owners.
