Robbery at the Kronk = one low blow

When I heard that thieves broke into Detroit’s legendary Kronk Gym last week and stole the facility’s copper piping, I was utterly digusted.

Broderick Tower ad

Is it just me or does the new ad on the Broderick Tower look like giant bugs are crawling up the side of the building?

I hated the bobblehead ad and couldn’t wait for it to come down, but now that this one is up – I can’t believe I’m saying this – but I liked the bobblehead one better. I guess I would rather have that than a bunch of Jeep Wranglers that look like giant bugs all over the building.

“Conversations with Mitch Albom”

So Mitch Albom has teamed up with Starbucks and will be making an appearance at one of eight Starbucks across the country. The Detroit stop somehow missed the city by a few miles and will be held in Bloomfield Hills at the Starbucks at the corner Maple & Lahser (3584 West Maple), Friday, October 6 from 12 p.m. – 1 p.m.

Clean Downtown Project

Have you seen the men and women who are dressed in green uniforms cleaning up the streets and parks Downtown? They are everywhere at any time. I have watched while they make sure Grand Circus Park is swept and the grass is raked. They have about six trucks that have power washing equipment and tools. Saw one power washing the sidewalk this morning at Washington and Park.

It’s really not the City that is doing this. The orginization, called Clean Downtown, is privately funded and has a budget for 2006 of 1.2 million dollars. Of that, $600,000 is contributed by non other that Roger Penske. He has put his own money into this investment in Downtown Detroit. His goal is to continue the task completed for SBXL. and that was to make Detroit shine.

The project boarders Jefferson, Adams, Beubien and Cass. There are about 40 workers from the Good Will Project and they work every day. So next time you see them helping to make our city look beautiful, give them a grateful thanks and tell them they are doing a great job.

DHM to Re-open Sept. 29

over the summer, the Detroit Historical Museum has undergone $800,000 worth of renovations, all which occurred under the transfer of operational responsibility to the Detroit Historical Society…

i went to the DHM last year with my wife and it was an interesting experience… it was cool to see all the stuff about the city and the region that they had… the “Streets of Detroit” exhibit is the best part, IMO… but at the same time, the museum in general wasn’t kept up very well and in that respect it was a little embarassing and somewhat indicative of how things have gone around here over the years… but now the DHM has been renovated and perhaps that’s a little more indicative of how things are changing around here??? let’s hope so…

check out the DHM’s site for specifics about renovations or read this article in the News for more info as well…

Retail and Grocer in Foxtown

do they still call it “Foxtown”???

great article in the News today about how the Tigers are helping downtown grow because of their winning ways… in the article, Atanas Illitch is quoted as saying that they are in “significant” talks with some national retailers and an upscale grocer… all who are interested in setting up shop near Comerica Park and the Fox… in addition, most of them don’t have a presence in Michigan…

this is good news!!! but i gotta see some results first… here’s hoping……….

Coup d’etat in Thailand

If you have yet to see or read any world news today, you probably aren’t aware of what’s been going on in Thailand.

Earlier today, the Royal Thai Army staged a coup d’etat against the government of Thailand’s Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra. Thaksin was attending a United Nations conference in New York at the time.

Weekend Football

A big hip-hip-hooray goes out to U of M, MSU and Wayne State – the football squads of each brought home victories this weekend.

The University of Michigan stomped #2 Notre Dame, beating the Fighting Irish 47-2, while Drew Stanton and the Spartans claimed a 38-23 victory over the Pittsburgh Panthers. Wayne State also won its game, coming from behind to beat Mercyhurst College 35-31 at Adams Field in Detroit.

The bleak spot of area football goes to the Lions, who lost – again – to the Chicago Bears. The final score was 34-7. Let’s hope their 0-2 start this season is just a fluke…
