The Pheonix of the River

Some of my fondest memories as a kid was sailing on one of two Boblo boats from downtown to Boblo Island amusement park south of Grosse Ile. I remember my family would sit on the starboard side because when the boat left the dock it made a 180 degree turn and we were left in the shade. It was about an hour cruise downriver and there was bands playing and children running all over the place. We ate hot dogs and drank Fago. These trips were always a great time for everyone in the family.

The cruises stopped more than a decade ago when AAA sold the island to real estate investors. The good news is that another Boblo lover is purchasing the Ste Claire in Lorraine, Ohio and he has plans to restore her to her original condition. What a daunting task he has but when finished she will take her place next to the Detroit Princess and sail the Detroit River once again. Dr. Ron Kattoo of the Henry Ford Hospital will be completing the transfer of title soon. He hopes to offer the boat for events and moonlight cruises. Another restoration for the D’ is underway!

    I think it’s spelled “Phoenix.”

    Cheers.
