Remembering Michael Guido

I was sad to hear that Dearborn Mayor Michael Guido died yesterday.

I didn’t know Mr. Guido personally, but I did know that he was elected, by his peers, as the 64th president of the United States Conference of Mayors in June 2006, and that his leadership led to some wonderful things in Dearborn, such as the $43 million Ford Community & Performing Arts Center and the Dearborn Ice Skating Center.

Further, Dearborn is one of few older cities in the Metro D with a growing population, and I believe Mr. Guido’s insistence on clean, safe cities had a lot to do with that.

Michael Guido was 23 when elected to the Dearborn City Council (the youngest Dearborn Council Member ever) and became mayor in 1986 (he was the youngest mayor ever elected in Dearborn, as well). This was Mayor Guido’s sixth term. He was diagnosed with cancer in February 2006 and died at his home yesterday at the age of 52.
