Press Review, Chapter 2

Today is the last day of Press Review at the NAIAS at Cobo Center. This is the 100th year for this event and from it’s small beginnings in 1907 to going international in January 1989, to todays hi-tech, hands on and interactive presentations, it always draws the crowds. Some 7000 journalists and 700,000 auto fans will attend this week and next.

Press Review is fun because it’s a chance to smooze with the big shots, the heavy hitters, the head ramrods of the auto companies. “Doctor Z” is always a hit at the Chrysler party. This event lasts all week and is annully held at the fire house located at the corner of Washington and Larned. You can see him behind the bar serving drinks and mingeling with the people who attend. Branden Inge was there last night along with Dave Rosma from the 84′ Tiger World Series.

The real stars are the cars. Gaaawwwd they are gorgeous. Some of my favorites this year include the Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano, (geez, how may names and prefixes do they have to have?), The Bently Continental GTC, ($210,000 US but the one at the show was $235 with added options which led me to think, what kind of options do you get for another 25K?).

There is an ice skating rink at the Mercedes-Benz exhibit. BMW had the best spread of food and drink with a full size bar and chefs preparing everything. You can’t help but enjoy this years International Auto Show.

The Charity Review is Friday night. The very first “Black Tie Night” was held in 1969 and costs $25. The event raised $25,000 for charity. This year the tickets are $400 a piece. Last years party raised $6.8 million.

So don’t forget to mark your calender for next weeks public review. It begins on Saturday the 13th and runs till’ the 22nd. Bring the kids and a camera. You’ll need it!
