Smalls in Hamtramck

I am embarrassed to say that I have never been out to enjoy the nightlife in Hamtramck. I caught a punk show on Saturday night at Smalls. It is gritty but cozy and a well laid out bar/concert venue. You can sit and enjoy your drinks and hear people in the bar area, even while a band is playing in the next room. It is small and intimate, and unfortunately smoky – mostly due to the fog machines. The dual head ceiling fans, as cool as they look, weren’t helping much.

Small’s is awesome. i’m there a lot since a lot of my friends bands play there and Natalie, the big dark haired bartender is sorta a friend which equals cheaper drinks for me

I went to Smalls back in my pre-21 days to go see Jason Mraz before he was big time. It was a pretty cool venue. We waited outside in the snow for a couple hours so we could get in the front row of the show. Before the show, Jason got into a car with his bandmates and they drove around town (the van was parked right in front of us) – presumably to smoke a j.

During the show he said something like, “Man, I drove around earlier and daaaaamn you guys really don’t give a fuck, huh?”
