City sponsors summer exchange program for teens

Detroit teens between the ages of 14 and 18 have the opportunity to travel to Toyota City, Japan this summer through Detroit’s Sister Cities Program. Selected teens — 8 in all — will spend about 14 days abroad. Each will live with a host family and partake in several activities related to Japanese history and culture.

The program is sponsored by the city of Detroit, but participating teens are responsible for airfare (about $1300).

Teens interested in the program need to act fast – the deadline to submit an application is April 6. Applications can be downloaded here. Applicants must be in good health and be Detroit residents. For pictures of the 2002 Detroit students that travelled to Toyota City, click here.

I wish they had exchange programs for non-teens and non-students. An essay contest perhaps for go-getting adults?
