Every year the festival was free it lost tons of money and many people involved in Detroit are still owed money from those years. This is also why the festival changed hands from year-to-year and when Kevin Saunderson, one of the three founders of techno, got so deep in debt that he had to give up and the current group, Paxahau, had to scurry to put together a world-class festival at the last minute last year. I think people need to stop expecting this kind of thing to be pulled off for free. There is still Tastefest (Cityfest) if you just want to listen to free electronic dance music.

Thank you for your comments. I wish the festival could be free, but from what I hear, an entrance fee adds an extra level of security and control. Eight days in June does sound great.

I moved here from FL in 2004 and went down to the (FREE) movement festival for the first time that summer. I was quite impress with the attedance and all of the after parties that happened following the concerts. 3 years later and I must admit I'm a bit disappointed in how the last 2 years have gone down. I hear it's partly because of the major decrease in sponsorship (we know how that goes) So I hope the organizers will find other means to continue. On another, note while there I got a flyer to attend a music festival called 8 Days In June being put on by the Detroit Symphony. Would you believe that they're bringing in Chuck D from Public Enemy! It sounds interested and the flyer was dope. check out their site. http://www.8daysinjune.com/
