Detroit’s Young and the Restless

I had the pleasure of attending Model D’s speaker series presentation this morning at the Detroit Yacht Club. The presentation featured Carol Coletta, Lou Glazer president of CEOs for Cities, Michigan Future Inc., and Director Michael DeVoss of the Michigan State Housing Development Authority. The talk centered around the need for cities – all cities – to attract young workers and residents. Youths ages 25-35 are the most mobile, hardest working for the least pay, and most recently educated. It was mentioned that people believe the young are leaving Michigan because of the economy, but they have apparently been leaving constantly even during Michigan’s most prosperous times. This group values clean attractive cities where they will be able to attain a desirable lifestyle.
