Canadian Geese … in Hawaii?

Aloha from sunny Hawaii [1], Detroit! I’ve got a few more days on my vacation, but I have a few minutes to chat and wanted to share this picture from my exploration of Waimea Canyon [2] in Kauai.
Does these birds look familiar? If you live in the metro Detroit area, they should.
The animals in the photo are nene, Hawaii’s state bird [3], and close relatives of Canadian Geese [4]. The major differences between our Canadian Geese and the nene? Nene, also known as Hawaiian Geese, don’t live in wet environments. And the nene population is not plentiful here like our Canadian Geese in Detroit. In fact, the nene are an endangered species.
