Although I admit I had bit of trepidation before walking into the Old Miami Wednesday night, I must say that I was pleasantly surprised. Not only were the regulars and staff downright friendly, they also introduced my friend and I to the “backyard”. The backyard which in staying true to its name was simply a large backyard made complete with lawn furniture, grass and grill. There was even a resident dog making himself comfortable amongst the crowd. Overall the Old Miami is everything that is right about Detroit bars.

Never had I enjoyed myself so much in years past. One of the features was definitely the delightfully terrifying silver dinosaurs (good show!); I believe anyone else who met up with these creatures could say the same. My thanks also go out to the fine gentlemen of both American Mars and Great Lakes Myth Society
for putting on such a keen show at the Magic Stick Saturday night, a perfect accompaniment to the day.

A couple of weekends ago while shopping in Eastern Market I was harassed by two homeless men, threatened by one, and witnessed two others using very public places for their bathrooms. Under usual circumstances I give what I can, but these men were particularly viscous and relentless. Now I do not scare easily, but these events left me with such uneasiness that they caused me to lay low in the city for couple of days. I was thinking of what to say about this particular issue, and this is what I have come up with. I do not have any problems with homeless people. I don’t know their stories, or how they came to be in this predicament. Most people fall on hard luck in life and some are not lucky enough to have people around them to help bail them out. That being said, I cannot stand panhandlers. Please have the decency not to harass me when I am walking alone. Please do not name call or threaten me if I don’t have the exact amount of money you have asked for. I can only imagine what people not used to these situations feel when they are only visiting the city; would they return?

As my friend Sarah and I drove home from the Launch party on Saturday night we witnessed a huge plume of smoke on Jefferson. Upon further inspection we arrived at a home that was completely consumed with flames. This was markedly sad because the house was clearly occupied. The fire department responded very quickly, but it was clear that nothing would be salvageable. As I was dialing 911, I realized that this was probably the fifteenth fire I have called on in five years. This got me thinking, just why are there so many fires in Detroit? As I write this there are six burned out houses on my street alone. A few years ago I was visiting a friend in Naperville Illinois and was very impressed by their fire safety program. Known as Safety Towns, these mock towns teach children fire safety, using realistic fire scenarios that include non-toxic smoke used to simulate a fire, ways to escape burning buildings, and smoke detectors. In a city that has so many house fires, and an average of fourty seven fire fatalities (mostly children) annually; I think it’s time we give the children of Detroit the same education.
