BLAIR’s One Man Show featuring music performed by Tone and Niche returns to the 1515 Broadway Theater. The last shows sold out so order tickets early. www.blairpoetry.com

You might be able to show up at the door…but you also might want to call 586-943-1776

The show is at 1515 Broadway, a small lesser known performance space near the Detroit opera house. It’s a short walk from Fox theater and Comerica Park. Show starts at 8pm. I’ll be there taking photos!

A couple of years back, the festival was in Hill Auditorium, a venue renowned for its acoustics. It’s a shame that it’s not there again, but while I didn’t have any trouble hearing the music, I couldn’t see anything from the balcony. The Ark is place you can get right next to artists and see them play. Highly recommended to anyone looking for a soulful, honest approach to music.

I’m in there somewhere, holding up a rake. Have of the fun of the 5k/10k race is the costumes! People dress as reindeer, santa, elves, spongebob, turkeys, even flamingos!

This year we decided to race as a Chinese-inspired dragon, which turned out to be a lot of work (we didn’t finish the 10K, only the 5K) but the kiddies loved us. I just couldn’t see much of where I was going!

If you’ve always wanted to race but were afraid (to ask) then the Turkey Trot is a good local event to start with. There’s even a Mashed Potato Mile. This year wasn’t as cold as last year…

I’ve heard that stair climbing used to live in Detroit as well, the “vertical mile”.

Well, now it’s back!

You can participate in a 70-floor stair climb in the Renaissance center. It’s 70 floors and though shorter than the other races, still will be a worthwhile climb. Besides, its for the donation and the team comradery more than anything else.

Check it out! I probably won’t participate as it’s the same Sunday as the Chicago climb and I’m already enlisted. Otherwise, I’d be there for sure!

I wrote about The Bread Basket a while ago, touting it one of the best Delis this side of Grand Central. However, I neglected to add one very good place in the heart of the D.

Tucked away near the MGM casino is a little box full of corned beef, pickles and ephemera – Eph McNally’s. If you’re not hungry you can just sit beneath the old tin ceiling and listen to the tunes as music videos and albums covers flash about on the tv screen. Lunchboxes from my childhood line the wall on one side, old board games and photos. You can grab a magazine and read up on what’s going on if pickles aren’t your thing.

But trust me, it’s a good $7.00 spent. I had some Beef and Black Bean stew with a garnish of Cilantro there today and hot damn was it good. The waiter said “I’m glad the name is kind of freaking people out a bit, ‘coz that means there will be more left over for me..”

I would’ve taken home a pot if I could.

Some poor man had the ball clock him in the head — producing a rather large lump — at which point the ball landed in the hands of the guy who “caught it”.

I’ve personally never caught a ball in Tigers Stadium (old or new) but I did have one fly by my face in Comerica park and hit someone else.

Have any of you ever caught a ball at a Tiger’s game?

While wandering around today getting some errands done for work I found myself on Southfield Rd. and 10 mile at around lunchtime. No sooner had the thought entered my head I knew exactly where I was going to lunch.

My friend who happens to be Jewish proclaimed it “the best deli west of New York” and having been to New York and been to a few delicatessens (including the one from When Harry Met Sally)I can’t help but agree with him. Though I liked the place well before he ever made that assertion.

In Grand Central you can pay $7.00 and get a damn good — but small — pastrami sandwich on rye. At the Bread Basket near 10 mile and Greenfield, you can pay $7.50 and get a monster sandwich that is tough to eat in one sitting (I used to cram one down no problem but realized the benefit of saving that last half for later). Matzah balls? Eh, no. These are Matzah SoftBalls, so-called because they’re almost that large. Of couse, that’s my designation, but The Bread Basket’s definitions don’t give any indication of the size of the portions.

But it’s not just BIG, it’s GOOD. If you’ve never been there and you too find yourself wandering hungry in the area, dont’ pass it up.
