After being a volunteer author on Detroit Metblogs for over two and a half years, I have decided it is time for me to move on to something new. As such, this will be my last post on the site. Before I go, I want to say thank you to the readers of the site, and to the crew at Metroblogging HQ for sharing their wisdom relating to blogging and life in general. A very special thanks goes out to the volunteer authors and captains that have come and gone since the site first launched; I enjoyed working with all of you and wish you nothing but success and happiness in the future!

It has been a fun and illuminating experience, metro Detroit. In the words of Fall Out Boy (or Bob Hope, if you’re Old School): Thanks for the memories.

Needless to say, don’t put away those gloves, scarves and boots just yet; we are likely going to see snow tomorrow, and freezing rain/snow on Thursday and Friday.

It’s still a week away, but the forecast for Opening Day is — gasp! — 50 degrees. Sorry to be skeptical, but I’ll believe it when I see it :)

I first heard about the charges brought against the mayor and Christine Beatty at about 11 this morning. It is now 6:30, and I am already sick of hearing about it. And it has only been 7 and a half hours! This is sure to be headline news around here for some time in the future, so I guess I better prepare myself.

I don’t know why, but it was comforting to come across this AP story and read about cities like Newark and Austin, both of whose mayors are currently embroiled in scandals. Unfortunately, it seems that, like Kwame, neither of these mayors has resigned.

I had my book club on Tuesday evening during the mayor’s State of the City address, so I didn’t hear it as it was happening, but I hard plenty about it on the local news when I arrived home that evening. The mayor said a lot during the speech, but the biggest hoopla to come out of the night were his remarks that the media is acting like a lynch mob against him and his blatant use of the N-word. I have to say, I was pretty stunned when I heard these elements of the speech recanted and analyzed on the 11 o’clock news. It was a bold move to defend himself during a time of political turmoil — but a very wrong move in my opinion. Kilpatrick should take a cue from Eliot Spitzer and resign with grace — and soon. The city and region, not to mention residents and businesses, will continue suffering otherwise.

Do you disagree? I’d love to hear your thoughts. Share them in the comments section below.

Free testing will be offered at the following two Detroit McDonald’s locations:

Lead is a powerful neurotoxin that interferes with the development and functioning of almost all body organs, particularly the kidneys, red blood cells, and central nervous system. In young children, lead retards the development of the central nervous system and brain. Childhood lead poisoning is the number one environmental health risk for children today. In the United States, more than three million children age six and younger already have toxic levels of lead in their bodies.
