About a week ago the Detroit News ran an article on Metro Detroit bloggers. Featured, with her picture and all is our own Girl In The D, Jaime.

For most bloggers the practice isn’t about making money. Nor is it about attracting a huge audience — although that can be rewarding, too. Rather, the rewards tend to be much more personal.

[Jaime] Pfeffer, author of the blog that chronicles positive happenings in Detroit, finds it a way to explore her creative side. She works for a retirement planning firm during the day and blogs at night.

“I really kind of turn into a different person,” she said.

You can read the article in full here.

This Sunday I caught a few minutes of a new show on WDET, Front Row Center. Its a local show hosted by Celeste Headlee and directed right at Detroit. The few minutes I caught were about teaming up the private and public parts of the Eastern Market as well as the future of non-profs in the metro area.

Hoping to find it available as a podcast I went to the website to hear it in full. Unfortunately, it is only available streaming on-demand (I wanted to put it on my portable player), but it is still worth listening to. Last Sunday’s show also talked much about Detroit’s infamous Purple Gang with commentary by a man who grew up with the families.

The show takes on a format similar to Here and Now, but also has a ’round-table’ feel where several experts not only debate on matters but brainstorm and build upon each others ideas. Of course this is all from the one episode I’ve heard so far, but it seems to be a very promising program.

You can hear it Sunday’s 11am-Noon on WDET or in wdetfm.org’s on-demand section.

This past Saturday, I had driven I-94 quite a bit. First going westbound, I noticed a state trooper on the shoulder with his lights on behind a car with a man changing his wheel. I pointed it out to my girlfriend, because its not often you see something like that. About 30 minutes later, I’m driving eastbound past the same area. Once again I see a trooper pulled behind a car, standing outside while a man is kneeling at a wheel with a tire iron. I had my suspicions, but it still could be pure coincidence. A few hours later I am once again driving westbound on 94 (this time on the way to see the Tigers, awesome game). Once again there is a trooper and another car setup like the other two times.

This is obviously a trap.
So many drivers in Michigan believe if a cop has someone pulled over, its okay to speed past them. This looked like a tactic to grab some of these people. I must say, I’m impressed by their cleverness.

Usually I would say I’m against speed traps, not because I like to speed, but because they are not effective — ineffective for road safety, very effective in ticket writing. However, in this case the cop is in clear view. If you feel you can still break the law since the officer is ‘too busy to catch you’, well then you had it coming.

Being both a foodie and a jazz lover, I couldn’t help but become ecstatic over the fact that Food Network will be at this year’s Detroit Jazz Fest. On September 2nd and 3rd Detroit will be hosting a Food Network Challenge Pastry contest. It will be filmed live. Also, FN will have a bar setup with bartender flair experts doing demonstrations. The bar will also host an amateur flair challenge where you are paired up with one of the experts.

I can’t wait!

Food Network is also having a sweepstakes for a chance to win air, lodging, and transportation to Detroit for the weekend. (how often do you see a grand prize trip to Detroit?) So if you want to spend the weekend 2 minutes away or know an out-of-town friend, sign up.

If you didn’t watch or listen to last night’s ballgame, you missed one for the record books. Two of our newest Tiger’s came out with flying colors. Sean Casey, just traded from the Pittsburg Pirates hit a homerun his first day on the field as a Tiger. Clevlen, just promoted from the minors this weekend managed to hit his first two homeruns in the majors.

Verlander stayed in for 7 giving him his 14th win of the season at the top of the league.

And if that wasn’t enough, Carlos Guillen hit for the cycle. For those who don’t know, hitting for the cycle is when you manage a single, double, triple and homerun all in one game. It doesn’t happen often and the Tampa Bay crowd knew it. When Guillen made his double to complete the cycle, the crowd went wild, leaping to their feet and cheering at the top of their lungs.

Guillen is the 3rd tiger to achieve this in the past 55 years and on a short list of about 10 Tigers for all-time.

Tonight, the Tigers play game 3 of 4 in Tampa at 7:15. Be sure not to miss it.

Well now they have the chance to show the nation what kind of talent continues to come from our hometown. NBC is hosting an online competition called Star Tomorrow.

MSU has decided that students studying abroad in Israel should return to Michigan. This was decided from the recent air raid activity.

“They are not in any imminent danger in Jerusalem, but we just feel that the general situation in Israel is deteriorating and it is not certain that if it does get worse that we’ll be able to evacuate them if we need to,” Fairfax said. “We feel it’s best to end it now.”

Freep

The university also offered to bring back two students and a professor who traveled there independently. The students declined.

Should MSU have forced these students to return home or would it have been best to just offer the chance?

Update:
Doing a little more searching I found another article on the matter. The early departure is mandatory, however it only cut a week of studies. Granted the final week is one of the most crucial weeks of a semester, but MSU is trying to make it up by paying for the returning trip and setting up classes on campus to make up lost time. According to one of the students they did not want to leave so early considering the conflict is about 4 hours away.
