You can find more information and history on various media sites, but basically the police raided an after-hours bar, where 80 black patrons were, and soon after police took them out, people on the streets began breaking into storefronts, vandalizing, and looting. Within 48 hours national guard moved in, and restored order eventually.

The riots have had a lasting effect in the minds of Detroiters and the suburbanites outside of the city.

The mayor was spoke at the ceremony held at Virginia Park this afternoon in the city.

I presumed this was to mark the moment that the grand finale was set to begin. I had my camera ready, and the one shot I had already taken of the quick blast were way overexposed. I was ready for something that never came. It was the end.

Usually finales last for AT LEAST a full minute. Hopefully next year will yield a better finale.

As I made my way near Campus Martius Park yesterday, I glanced to the east for a moment, and a bulge on top of the historic Bagley fountain caught my eye. Originally I had heard that the actual fountain would not be installed and the art piece would remain nonfuctional, but as I got closer, those claims were false, as on all four sides of the fountain, lion heads were spitting out fresh water. See the photo I took at left for a view.

I am not sure how long the new fountain has been in place, but I remember sitting on top of the base a month ago, watching the city go by.

Once again the beautiful fountain designed by renowned architect Henry Hobson Richardson (his only known existing work in the city) flows with water “cold and pure as the coldest mountain stream”, as intended by John Bagley, for whom the fountain is named for, as he gave the funds to build the fountain.

Suprisingly the fountain hasnt operated continuously since 1939, so this is a very special thing to witness.

Though I am not sure if they now intend for the fountain to be a decorative water feature rather then a functional drinking fountain, I did get a drink of the water with a little bit of difficulty. The water flows out on all sides at all times, in a wide spray.

Walking downtown today I happen to find about a half-dozen digital photo prints deliberately wedged in the little plywood barrier in front of the David Whitney Barrier.

I grabbed about three to hold on to, just for the fun of it. All of the photos there were taken down Woodward Avenue, in a random fashion, as to just point and shoot. Many were blurry, and many showed looking up at a building, the view of people walking down the sidewalk with their backs turned to the camera.

Why? Who knows, but just another random thing that makes the city what it is!

I have been watching the Celebrate Michigan photo contest since the beginning of May. I submitted a few photos early on and watched the progression and addition of photos.

I knew I most likely wouldn’t win, so when they released the winners I was content until I seen what they were. As I clicked the link to view the winner gallery. I was appaled to find that some of the winners were hardly photos at all, in my eyes.Most tone mapped/HDR images are in no way photos in my opinion, as they aren’t natural as the eye would see it. Many of these photos were manipulated in this way, or were photoshopped beyond realism (such as Kevin Cliffords photo, which is more like a painting, then a photo. How can drugged up colors like a purple river ever be acceptable?). In addition to this was a poorly created panorama that was partially underexposed, with seams and vignetting showing. I know photos don’t have to be masterpieces, but some of them don’t capture how the location would look in real life.

Phoographers such as Ryan Southen and Adrian Platts should have ranked higher then many of these photos. First, third, were good photos and are examples of what should have been seen in the winners gallery.

Am I just overreacting, or are fake images giving false impressions of Michigan?

Simply go to Google Maps (or click the image to the left to go straight to Detroit), find your destination and click Traffic, and there you have it!
Colors represent the speed ot traffic. The legend is as follows:
* Green: more than 50 miles per hour
* Yellow: 25 – 50 miles per hour
* Red: less than 25 miles per hour
* Gray: no data available

It is obvious that we need more traffic sensors here in the Motor City, but hey, it’s a start!

it is good to see a new pizza resturant in the city, as selection is somewhat limited, and of course new development is good period. I am happy to see that Shield’s will be located inside the Kales Building, as I always was disappointed to see nothing takeoff at the corner.

Hopefully this can spur development to the west of Grand Circus Park, and get Park Avenue hopping!

This leads me to believe that Popeyes has dumped this trash here, at least someone has. In the end, I believe that Popeyes should be responsible for the removal and fines resulting from this littering.

See for yourself everyone! This litter is located in an alley a block away from E.Grand Blvd & Woodward, behind the 3000 block of E. Grand Blvd. The popeyes is located about 2 blocks away.
