Cinco de Mayo parade in pictures

Miss last weekend’s Cinco de Mayo parade in Mexicantown? Metro Detroit’s SNWEB.org has a beautiful set of photos of the event that make you feel like you are right there in the middle of the action. Check them out by clicking here, or clicking on one of the colorful thumbnails in our Metroblogging Detroit Flickr Pool in the vertical box on the right.

Toynbee Mystery

Fuzzy over at Chicago Metblogs did a post on Chicago’s site today about Toynbee Tiles, which have been spotted again recently in the Windy City.

Before I read Fuzzy’s post and read this NPR article from Saturday, I wasn’t familiar with the license plate-size tiles that have shown up in the asphalt of several US cities including Detroit and three South American cities, but I feel like I have a faint memory of coming across one while downtown and thinking, “What on Earth is that?” and then just dismissing it as street art.

Has anyone seen any Toynbee Tiles around town lately? Apparently they get paved over quite often.

Minimalistfan on Flickr has pictures of the Detroit tiles - uploaded and taken in May 2005, but he credits them to someone else.

In Detail: The Book-Cadillac Hotel

Michigan Avenue Facade

I recently spent some time photographing the Book-Cadillac Hotel in-detail. It is quite an amazing building, architecturally speaking. See the extended entry for a full look at the facade details.

Snap Crackle and Pop in the Sky

IMG_4528.jpg

The view from the Kales building was halfway decent. If I weren’t looking for a house right now I’d probably move downtown somewhere. I’ve heard good and not-so-good things about various places, but on the whole the life that beats in the downtown area would make it worth it.

Alas, I’m not that young anymore ;)

Easter Chocolate, originally uploaded by mainegal.

Can you believe the weather? Saturday was about as perfect as they get.

A busy but good weekend for me. I hope yours was just as nice.

And look what the Easter Bunny (aka GD’s mom) gave me. Isn’t he amazing? For the first time in my life, I don’t want to eat my easter chocolate. But then again, the bottom broke off so I can just eat the little chocolates that were inside.

(Hand-painted chocolate came from Le Petit Prince in Birmingham. Disclosure: I am dating one of the sons of the Le Petit Prince owners.)
