Steward aims to keep Kronk Gym Open

In other Detroit budget news, boxing legend Emanuel Steward announced that he plans to raise $300,000 – 400,000 over the next three months in order to keep Detroit’s Kronk Gym open.

The gym, where Steward trained legendary boxers like Hilmer Kenty and Tommy Hearns, is part of Detroit’s Kronk Recreation Center – one of nine rec centers set to be closed on Jan 2 as a result of the mayor’s recently-announced round of budget cuts.

According to this article in Crain’s Detroit, Steward will meet with Charles Beckham, Detroit Recreation Department Director, on Friday to discuss whether Steward can buy the gym.
