Urban Perspectives

Last Thursday at noon I attended the Arthur L. Johnson Urban Perspectives series held by the Alumni Association at Wayne State University. Arthur Johnson introduced Judge Damon Keith who introduced Edsel B. Ford, II – charming men with an unrivaled passion for the city and its surrounding areas. Their focus seemed to be on getting things back to the “way it used to be”. I heard lovely stories of taking a bus from the eastside to downtown to visit Hudson’s and how it is their dream to have their grandchildren experience the same thing. For many who are now living in the city – of a younger generation, immigrants, non-natives – this dream is but a story and not a goal to stand behind. However, in Mr. Ford’s address he did stress the importance of a unified goal for Detroit and its surrounding areas, where a return to good memories is an important part.
