this was the report that i heard, please tell me i heard it wrong
9%… yes, NINE PERCENT…that’s the number of registered voters that got off their (probably) overweight, uncool asses to vote for new Detroit school board members yesterday. i want to go on and on about how sad this is and about how parents seem as though they honestly don’t care about their childrens futures and about the lazy city that wants everything fixed but don’t want to work for it but i won’t.
Have ya ever checked the voter turnout in school board elections in any surrounding cities? Turnout will be just as inexcusable. Doesn’t make it better but certainly indicates the lathargic attitude of all voters Detroit or not.
i don’t doubt that, Kim but i think Detroit has more school related problems than some of the other districts and with all the people that show up to bitch when someone mentions a school closing i just expected that sort of fire when it came time to let their votes do the talking.
Most of the people that I know, myself included, knew nothing about anyone running. Save for a few candidates that actually put out a flyer trying to explain their history and desire to be on the school board – the candidates themselves did nothing to actually educate the public about what they could do for the schools.
If you can’t cast an educated ballot, and throw support behind someone that you actually believe can do the job, then don’t elect someone based on a name and a handshake.
Abster, I totally agree. It is a shame that so few people come out to vote, but for the last few years I have really been disappointed with the amount of information that we have about any of the candidates unless it is a big city mayor, governor, or national election. There is just not enough information to the public for these local elections. It’s as if we are picking candidates by their names or how fancy their flyers are. Even in the era of the “superhighway” there just is not much information about these local candidates. We have to do better. We have to demand more.
